No country has yet found an investment funding model that provides sufficient capital to support the growth aspirations of its growing firms.If you have a business which needs $5 million investment as opposed to $500,000 to get to break even, then you should probably give up now.

Colin Brown came up with a product to solve a specific Kiwi problem: how to accurately map and report the efficient spreading of fertiliser on New Zealand farms.So what is he doing talking to Unlimited down the line from North America? Brown, who has been touting his GPS products to audiences as diverse as aerial sprayers and spreaders in Canada and firefighters in San Diego, says he always planned a broader sell.
With limited cash, speed to market and the quality of the company's strategic decisions were all the more important. Brown says having access to strategic advice as a company in Dunedin's Upstart business incubator was vital. The decisions early on to appoint a board and engaging Christchurch-based, hi-tech industry veteran Phil Holliday as a mentor were also key, he says.

Private equity reports rise in overall activity and market confidence

New Zealand's private equity market is emerging from the recession in a positive frame, according to a new report released today by Ernst & Young and the NZVCA.Results of the report - the seventh full-year New Zealand Private Equity and Venture Capital Monitor 2009 - show significant increase in activity compared with 2008, both in terms of the number and value of deals.
The rise in overall activity saw $645.1 million of activity in 2009 compared to $224.6 million in 2008. Medium-sized private equity deals were resilient, and angel investor-led venture capital activity increased significantly.

ECKey starts to unlock potential

Kiwis could soon be unlocking their front doors with their cellphones using technology developed by Auckland firm ECKey.ECKey, whose shareholders include Trade Me founder Sam Morgan and The Warehouse founder Stephen Tindall, also plans to embed the technology in the security systems of several big international security companies, and is raising US$1 million in capital from overseas investors to fund its growth, Dr Willis says.
